Dr. Barnewitz
Dr. Kate Barnewitz joined the Shorewood Animal Hospital in June 2019. Kate grew up in Shorewood, and her interest in veterinary medicine began while employed as a kennel assistant at the Shorewood Animal Hospital in high school. She completed her undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Utah in 2014, then returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2019.
Kate especially enjoyed her volunteer experiences during veterinary school. She participated in a Rural Area Vets training program that brings veterinary services to underserved communities. She was also a student volunteer and clinic administrator at the Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services (WisCARES) program that provides veterinary care to individuals facing homelessness and housing insecurity in Dane County. Kate had a small-animal focus to her veterinary training, and is grateful to have had opportunities to learn spay/neuter techniques through the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, and visit Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, to practice general medicine for shelter animals. During her fourth year of vet school, Kate attended the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and received her certification in veterinary acupuncture. She has a strong interest in integrative/holistic medicine, pain management, preventative medicine, geriatrics, and palliative veterinary care. Outside of work, Kate enjoys swimming, yoga, bird-watching, and spending time with her shiba inu, Addie.
